Cowboy Jim you will be deeply missed

We are saddened to hear of the passing of "Cowboy" Jim Kennedy. Jim was always willing to take the time to talk to our announcers/fans and would even entertain us with a yodeling session when time allowed. Condolences to his family and friends.

Below is the write-up shared with Port Royal Speedway in honor of Jim’s life:

James W. Kennedy, “Flying Cowboy” a lifelong racing enthusiast, passed away on April 2, 2026. Born on August 7, 1934, in Curryville, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late James B. Kennedy and Florence G. Kennedy.

Jim began his racing career in 1958 and went on to spend an incredible 68 years behind the wheel, competing in 305 and 410 sprint cars. His passion for racing carried him through August 2025, earning him recognition as a dedicated and respected figure in the sport. In honor of his achievements, he was inducted into the PA Racesavers Sprint Car Hall of Fame.

Before retiring in 1996, Jim held a variety of jobs and was a proud member of the Carpenters Union.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene, with whom he shared 72 years of marriage. He is also survived by his siblings, John Kennedy and Shirley Drake (Shirley preceded him in death).

Jim leaves behind his children: Michael Kennedy, Barry Kennedy, Jay Kennedy and his wife Becky, and Linda Kennedy-Rife and her husband Gary.

He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Brandey (Kennedy) Pavlick and her husband Chris; the late Shane Kennedy; Kayla Kennedy; and Faith (Kennedy) Richardson-Fidazzo and her husband Lucas.

He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Claire Kennedy, Kate Rummel and her husband Noah; Kalysta, Isabella, and Barrett Kennedy; and Makenna, Brodhi, and Makayla Richards.
Additionally, he is survived by his great-great-grandchildren: Sullivan Rummel and Oaklyn Kennedy.

Jim will be remembered for his passion for racing, dedication and his strong work ethic.
